Top tips

Tufting loves big, bold and simple. Here's what makes a design easy and fun to tuft.

Big, bold shapes

Chunky shapes are easy to fill and look great up close. Small fiddly bits tend to get lost in the pile.
Thick lines

Nice thick lines show up clearly. Thin, wavy lines tend to blend into whatever is next to them.
Flat blocks of colour

Each area is one colour of yarn, so shading and soft blends don't translate. Three to six colours is a sweet spot.
Short, chunky words

Bold sans-serif fonts and short words read best. Small text, thin outlines and hand lettering are hard to make out once tufted.
Think about the outline

Your rug is cut out along its outer shape, so a clear, chunky silhouette looks best. Thin bits that stick out work better with a border around them.
Turn photos into drawings

Love a photo? Trace the main shapes and fill them with flat colours. Pets, plants and places all work brilliantly this way.

Photos taken at an angle

We trace your design onto the backing, so we need it flat and straight on.

Thin lettering

Fine letters get lost in the fluffy pile.

Try: a shorter word in a chunky font.
Lots of circles and details

Curves and tiny details take practice to get right.

Try: fewer, bigger shapes. You'll have more fun, we promise.
