Auf Deutsch lesen: Was ist Tufting? So entsteht ein Teppich mit der Tufting-Pistole

Tufting is a textile technique where yarn is punched through a stretched fabric with an electric tufting gun. Stitch by stitch, you build up a fluffy surface, a bit like painting with a very thick brush. The result is a rug or wall piece that can be cut, carved and even sculpted.
How does it work?
- Stretch the cloth: a special backing fabric is pulled tight onto a frame.
- Transfer the design: the design is drawn onto the cloth. You work from the back, so your image appears on the other side.
- Tuft: you guide the gun across the cloth and it places the yarn, line by line.
- Glue and back: glue locks the yarn in place, then a backing goes on.
- Trim: the edges and surface are cut into shape. This is when it starts to look like a finished rug.
Tufting or punch needle?
Both push yarn through fabric. Punch needle is done by hand with a needle: calm, and usually on a smaller scale. Tufting uses an electric gun, which is much faster and works well for larger pieces.
Is it hard?
No, but you do need a short introduction. The gun is powerful and needs guiding. After a few trial lines, most people settle into a rhythm quickly. Simple designs with clear shapes and bold colours work best; fine details and small text are better left for later. Our design tips and rug designer can help you plan.
